Raija Jokinen builds her works one fiber at a time, aiming to portray situations, twists and feelings of being. At the center of the works is a human figure – typical, common, anyone – where inner and environmental moods meet. The external influences the internal and the internal influences the external, but the interface between them often remains fluid.
The works often feature organic forms that resemble the physical nature of humans, but which merge with structures such as roots, branches and plants without directly representing anything specific. The similarity of these forms, their endless variation and life-sustaining nature are fascinating: fragility and strength run side by side.
The artist's working method can be compared to painting, drawing and sculpture, but the material used is flax fiber, which is usually known as the base material for oil painting or graphics, for example. The technique is based on the textile tradition,…
