“I am interested in what forms the need for decoration has taken over time, and why?”

In her earlier paintings, Merja Heino has explored the human need to decorate and adorn, which is reflected throughout history in art, architecture, ornamentation and dress.

The elements of Baroque and Renaissance architecture and ornamentation characteristic of his earlier work have given way to a purely modern expression in his new paintings. Instead of ornamentation, I use a freer ‘curl’. Why is curl considered beautiful? Why not a straight line?

The exploration of colour now plays a greater role in my work. Alongside the new curls, the exhibition includes ‘colour bar paintings’ of colour juxtapositions.
