MARCUS LERVIKS

3.5.-22.5.2022

In the makers' gallery exhibition, I combine two older drawing sets.  I have chosen works that are more than 20 years old because I have not previously exhibited these drawings in  a gallery and that although there are seven years between drawing sets, there is a strong visual similarity between them, although both series are based on a completely different basic idea. I've had this combination in mind for a long time, and now that I have the opportunity to exhibit at makers' gallery, I can put my old idea into practice.

For the exhibition at Makers Gallery I will combine two older series of drawings. The reason I have chosen works that are more than 20 years old is that I have not shown the drawings in a gallery before and that even though there are 7 years between the series of drawings, there is a strong visual similarity between them, although both series are based on totally different ideas. I have had this combination in mind for a long time, and now that I have the opportunity to exhibit at Makers Gallery I can realize an old idea.

"Networking" 1998

In 1997, I was on an exchange programme in Berlin for two months, and during this stay I was mainly surprised by what kind of infrastructure the larger city had to offer. My favorite hobby during my time in Berlin was to travel on the subway at random around the city without knowing where I was. When I came to the station, I climbed up the stairs and looked around and then the journey of discovery continued. As a result of this repetitive habit, drawings were randomly drawn of street and river structures from a map of Berlin.

"16:9 Movie Drawings" 2005

16:9 Movie Drawings is a series of drawings made from stills from different movies. Each drawing contains a large number of stills from the same movie, about 50-200 images, depending on the length and visual diversity of the film. The final drawings were created during the production process by drawing the outlines of each new still image over the outlines of the previous still images. The impression of the final drawings can make you think of some kind of maps, maps that capture the visual language of each film as a composition that seems abstract, even though it consists of unambiguous and clearly presented still images.
